This lesson takes the mystery out of reading tablature. We also expand on the Forward\Reverse Roll and play it with three chords. I teach Banjo, Guitar and Mandolin in the Dallas Tx area also online via Skype E-mail: banjozone@aol.com

  • Great video! It's my third day of owning my first-ever Banjo (first-ever instrument really) and I'm having a blast.

I'm having lots of trouble fretting with these fat fingers though. Hopefully lots of practice will solve that problem.

What are your thoughts about the "Murphy Method" for learning Banjo?

  • I thing the Murphy method is great! She does not use tab and shows everything by string, fret number etc. so the song is memorized as you go. Its good to learn by tab, and by written note as well. Each method uses a different skill set. I do not think it is good to get locked into just one way of learning the banjo. There are many good books available that are written in tab, but it is very helpful to be able to learn by watching too. Good Luck! hope this helps

  • Thanks, going to put some more on in a few weeks

  • Good video, thanks for sharing. Well presented and aired. Hope ye all not too hot down there in Texas. Best wishes from cold, damp and rainy Ireland

  • I know this is an old video, but I cannot thank you enough! I just got my first banjo and was struggling with the fingering and you just made it CLICK!! thanks again

  • Because of people like you, Youtube is a GREAT PLACE!

  • Ok, so I made a youtube account just so I could ask you a question. :)

I picked up my mother's old banjo and decided I'd learn to play.

I've never touched a stringed instrument, but I've played the piano.

Your first lesson just confused me, but when I watch this lesson it just clicked.

I've always learned better with instructions on paper, so no surprise.

Anywho, I was wondering if you had pdf's or something so I could print out those tablatures. It's hard to practice in my room.

  • This was really good for an idiot like me. :D Easy for an begginer and very useful!

  • tabs are good, but they never put any rolls in them, like if its forward roll or anything. Thats the only thing i dont care to much for

  • GreatFor People Who Can Play,But Don't Know How To Read Music!!!

  • Fantastic!! Wish we lived in Dallas. Do you by any chance sell a series of lessons?
