@Cassanovella Yeah. Haiti imports U.S. sugar now, when they were once the largest sugar producer in the world! Their economy cannot survive with free trade if American goods are consistently cheaper than their own.

President Aristide tried to do good things for Haiti. The elite (who enjoyed the Duvalier regime) did not like his policies, which were intended to create an even somewhat self-sufficient Haitian economy, so they, with some help from the U.S., ousted him. Twice. They have also (undemocratically) banned his political organization, Fanmi Lavalas, which has the support of the majority of Haitians.

No mention of why the money & subsequent food left in the 1980s? Just a little fact-based conjecture, but the US subsidies of American corn and corn syrup killed the last agriculture Haiti had- sugar. So... our sweet teeth (tooths?) and lobbiests also made Haiti poor. I'd say government DID FTBA. Whoops.

Holy crap. The subtitles on this video are accurate! On every other video known to youtube if you click subtitles the people will say 'cheese sandwich' and the subtitles will say 'in the houses of parliament' (I've literally seen that happen) xD
