Vietnam's last Emperor, Nguyen Vinh Thuy, came to the throne in 1926 as Bao Dai or "Keeper of Greatness" after the death of his father Emperor Khai Dinh. Educated in France he was not allowed to carry out the reforms he wished but after the Japanese occupation declared the independence of the Empire of Vietnam. However, the country was soon engulfed by the August Revolution led by the Communist VietMinh. In 1945 he abdicated as Emperor but later returned to lead the Saigon-based State of Vietnam as Chief of State. In 1955 he was overthrown in a rigged election by his U.S.-backed Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem. He lived in exile in France until his death in a military hospital in Paris in 1997. He is one of only two emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty not buried in Vietnam.

When was it that State of Vietnam established ? Who was the France's president at that time ? Did they have a treaty to declared VN an independent country allied with France ? Where was the treaty signed ?

  • @teateatheman The State of Vietnam was established in 1949 when Vincent Auriol was President of the Fourth Republic. There were a number of treaties and agreements signed but it was complicated with the level of "independence" disputed by enemies and supporters of the government. The 1948 Halong Bay agreements called for a unified Vietnam, "associated" with the French Union -that is often cited.

  • was he pure vietnamese or chinese mix?

  • @Rico8458 Pure Vietnamese -Vietnamese monarchs did not often take Chinese wives, their consorts were usually of their own country or neighbors like Thailand.

  • @MadMonarchist All Queens of Nguyen Dynasty were chosen from Southern Provinces of Vietnam to appreciate Southern people who had help Nguyen's before Gia Long Emperor get the throne. When the lady was chosen, she was named as Highest Mistress, not Queen. It restricted the lady who was King's wife or mother to control the country. She was named as Queen after she died. There was only exception with the last Emperor. He named his first wife as Nam Phuong Hoang Hau- The Queen of Southern Area.
