The waterfall at Bluff Springs in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, near Cloudcroft, is a popular spot. So this wont be part of the "Sounds From Lonely Places" series. I went on a Friday afternoon in August and was lucky to have the place to myself for about an hour.
The dirt road to the springs was an adventure. Drove around the cows, turned left, maneuvered the car sideways across the embankment to get around the mud hole while taking care not to slip or risk being swallowed whole in the mud, longed for a stopping place because I just had to have that soda back there in Alamogordo, continued another four miles, crossed the cattle guard, and there it was!
I set my mic on top of a fencepost and pointed it toward the waterfall, so it would capture that sound as well as the trickle of the stream running by below. Unlike other sound files that I've patched together from individual recordings at different onsite locations, this one is one straight run of recording time. In this case, the waterfall did all the work.
While the recording ran, I hiked up the trail to the top of the falls area. Here a beautiful meadow and colorful wildflowers make up the scenery. I lazed about for a bit, enjoying the quiet. Soon, though, my "I'm Out Here All By Myself And There Could Be Bears and/or Bigfoot" alarm went off, and I returned to the waterfall and gathered up my things to go.
Hi, Linda! I call my microphone "Little Bigfoot" because of the furry windscreen, so in a way, I did see one. Thanks for reposting the video on your blog. I'm glad you found it interesting enough to do so.
