http://airboyd.tv United News Newsreel Operation Pluto (Pipe-Lines Under The Ocean) was a World War II operation by British scientists, oil companies and armed forces to construct undersea oil pipelines under the English Channel between England and France. The scheme was developed by Arthur Hartley, chief engineer with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. Allied forces on the European continent required a tremendous amount of fuel. Pipelines were considered necessary to relieve dependence on oil tankers, which could be slowed by bad weather, were susceptible to German submarines, and were also needed in the Pacific War. Geoffrey William Lloyd, the Minister for Petroleum, met Admiral Mountbatten, Chief of Combined Operations, whose area this was, in 1942 and then the Chairman of Anglo-Iranian. Hartley's idea of using adapted submarine telephone cable was adopted.

  • To those who say "Why haven't we heard of this before?" - Operation PLUTO has been common knowledge for at least 50 years!

It is well documented in most comprehensive histories of D-Day.

And from its format and narration this film probably dates from the late 1940s or the 1950s - hardly a modern revelation!

What a good film though, with much detail about this astounding British feat which was so important to the Allied invasion and subsequent operations in Europe. Thanks for posting it.

  • Wow.. impressive!

  • Maybe we can run one from Canada to the US. ;-)

  • WOW! A very remarkable idea and unprecedented event.

I have never heard of this extraordinary achievement.

Why was this not publicized before?

  • Just Ingenious !! ..We `Need` Ideas Like This Today !!

  • @texasc4 what does Unicorn milk have to do with anything?

  • 43 likes and 3 dislikes? Who wouldn't like this... leftover Nazis?

  • My volume will not adjust. It is too low.

  • And to think Obama thinks Unicorn milk could do the job!

  • Really cool. This is the first I ever heard of this!
