I didn't do any filming during the first few days. I was really concentrating on learning the skills and wrapping my head around getting rid of my bad habits. I managed to strap the camera the roll bar for a couple runs on days 4 & 5. Turns out I should have done the whole time as it's a great way to later review what I was doing wrong.

Not only was I able to learn from the experience of the excellent instructors at the school I was also lucky to have Chris Greenhouse's brain to pick from his experiences in rally so far! (That's who's giggling during the trail braking haha)

  • Where was this school, Nate? What prompted you to get into rally driving? I've never seen any expression of interest in rally from ya....it's my favorite form of racing! I was trying to get some interest started in it in the R/C form....

  • @Charredbriar You haven't gone far enough back in my video library then Ken! Ever since I started playing Rally Video games back in the late 80s I have been into it. The School is located in Dalton NH about 3 hours north of Boston.

  • @pigeonfarmboy I guess I'll have to dig a bit, then. I get most of your vids on my pipe channel subscription and I know you haven't been a member of the pipe community for very long but prior to that, who knows. I'll spend some time and check it out. How long is the school? You must have taken vacation to attend, then, eh? They might have something like that up here by me, in Michigan but I'm not sure. I know there's rally races held in the national forests up there.

  • @Charredbriar There's only 3 schools I know of and they're only on the east and west coasts. teamoneil[.]com is their website, you can see that they offer the schools in as many days as you want to attend. I needed the 5 day to strengthen my knowledge of stage notes as I'm teaching my co-driver "from scratch"

You definitely live in the right place to attend or compete in rallies as there's tons within very short driving distances from you for sure! Since you're VW savvy get a golf!

  • @pigeonfarmboy There seems to be a lot of auto cross events, too. A friend I R/C race with is into that with Suby's. Doesn't run the WRX's but the bigger model..forgot what it was now. I thought the object was to run 4wd cars in rally....2wd seems to work ok? Also, where can you get those newer style rally helmets?

    Ken

  • @Charredbriar You'd be suprised how much a 2wd car will break loose the rear end around corners with the right technique. 2WD is probably the most competitive class for non-sponsored privateers. I own a Peltor Helmet for a couple reasons. The comm unit & headphones are full covered ear units that take alot of engine noise out of the picture and they already come with the HANS posts installed. You can use many other helmets however and put in your own comms and posts. PM me for more info.
