Camille underestimates the divisive nature of religion...and fails to realize that 40% (or more) of religious Americans are fundamentalists that reject modern science. There's also an element of mental child abuse in religion...especially with teachings like hell and The Rapture.
She also fails to mention that basic message in most great religions, mystical traditions, secret societies, etc... can be found in THE MATRIX or STAR WARS...kids could understand Perennial Philosophy through film.

The great monotheistic religions were born of civilized alienation. Everything about Christianity, for instance, suggests a deep and traumatic separation from nature. Civilized religion is essentially a system of protective magic against wildness.

Camille looks a bit like Al Pacino!

I remember reading about 15 years ago that Sexual Personae Vol 2 was in preparation, what happened to it?

@321bytor hitchens is a confused and superficial hack with an addled mind. paglia is not.

@321bytor Just google Hitchens on the King James Bible.

@321bytor Yeah, and her belief seems especially silly seeing as how important Hitch regards the King James Bible to be.

Such a phenomenal interview. I've watched it like 20 times, and am still impressed by her piercing, nuanced insights. She may be persona non grata in the hallowed halls of academia, but the Ivy League's loss is our gain. Great to have her back on the scene.

I don't think the Bible forbids graven images in the sense of art at all. The 10 commandments mean graven images for the purpose of worshiping those graven images, which people did do and still do.
That was great! Camille always offers a refreshing perspective. One thing that I particularly admire is how she always talks from experience, very grounded without any blanket theories. Please Jian, if at all possible, I would love to see her back on!

She's right about Hitchens. He's a bush league thinker, with no feel for art or literature. I just finished WHY ORWELL MATTERS; 200 pages later I have no idea why Orwell is supposed to matter. . .and neither does Hitch.
Hitch's one accomplishment has been to turn atheism into a new identity politic. So whereas only blacks and gays and Catholics could get offended by "negative" portrayals in the media, now atheists can. What a meaningless accomplishment. Good riddance, Hitch.
