"We waited until the blast had passed, walked out of the shelter and then it was extremely solemn...
if the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky that would be like the splendor of the mighty one...
the optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds and the pessimist knows it."

Nuclear weapons tests are experiments carried out to determine the effectiveness, yield and explosive capability of nuclear weapons. Throughout the twentieth century, most nations that have developed nuclear weapons have tested them. Testing nuclear weapons can yield information about how the weapons work, as well as how the weapons behave under various conditions and how structures behave when subjected to nuclear explosions. Additionally, nuclear testing has often been used as an indicator of scientific and military strength, and many tests have been overtly political in their intention; most nuclear weapons states publicly declared their nuclear status by means of a nuclear test.
The first atomic test was detonated by the United States at the Trinity site on July 16, 1945, with a yield approximately equivalent to 20 kilotons. The first hydrogen bomb, codenamed "Mike", was tested at the Enewetak atoll in the Marshall Islands on November 1 (local date) in 1952, also by the United States. The largest nuclear weapon ever tested was the "Tsar Bomba" of the Soviet Union at Novaya Zemlya on October 30, 1961, with an estimated yield of around 50 megatons.
In 1963, all nuclear and many non-nuclear states signed the Limited Test Ban Treaty, pledging to refrain from testing nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, underwater, or in outer space. The treaty permitted underground nuclear testing. France continued atmospheric testing until 1974, while China continued up until 1980. The last underground test by the United States was in 1992, the Soviet Union in 1990, the United Kingdom in 1991, and both France and China continued testing until 1996. After adopting the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in 1996, all of these states have pledged to discontinue all nuclear testing. Non-signatories India and Pakistan last tested nuclear weapons in 1998.
The most recent nuclear test was announced by North Korea on October 9, 2006.

This is supposed to be the most evil thing we have. Yet its so beutiful in these pictures. The forbidden fruit. The underwater tests are magnificant. I know these are supposed to be the most evil man has to offer but at the same time, nothing has done more to prevent war then the Nuclear Weapon. No doubt we would have gone to war with the soviets had these not existed. No super power has gone to war with each other since the nuke has been possesed. So bad but such a good deterant.

Notice how America never tested another nuke after the soviet union collapsed. We never had them for offensive purposes. It was ONLY a deterrent and this prooves that. After the soviet collapse we never used one again. Not very imperialistic of us now is it.

@schlorkl Think how they would be today if the Abomb hadn't been dropped. You think Japan is greedy now. LOL

I hate all weapons of mass killing. Imagine what will be if one of these bombs will explode in cities like big megapolis's! What will be?

The US and other governments have dark track records of atomic testing on the troops and the public living down wind. A sad legacy that we will live with forever. We make radiation absorbing undergarments for everyday use also stop x-rays from the new powerful airport scanners. RockyFlatsGear(.)com

0:53 is not a nuclear warhead, i dont know about the others because i didnt watch the whole video.. but you can tell because there is no extension at the base, when a nuclear warhead detonates the direction of radioactive isotopes directs part of the famous mushroom cloud out towards the base, not shown in this photo
