(November 6, 2008) The U.S. elected Barack Obama as its new president. Some international media questioned whether Americans could see past the color of his skin. Broadcasters searched for racism in America, and found it. But was it a fair judgement of the U.S. in the 21st century?

The reason they call him black is visual. In our history, no matter how many people in your family are white, if your skin is not white you would be considered black. Even one of our founding fathers, Jefferson, had a complicated formula to tell if you are black. Many whites like to use him being part another race to explain his intelligence and success, just like they do with Tiger Woods and Lewis Hamilton, both domininating their fields...almost to counteract their blackness...

The problem is that you will find it is mostly conservatives, (no I am not liberal - I am a mixture of many ideas and registered independent), seem to always try to identify Obama as mixed...they do the same thing with Tiger Woods...saying he is more asian than black...I look black, and if a white person did not know my history they would not know I have a Portuguese great grandfather...if they did not know Obama's/Tiger's family he would be called black by them by his visual appearance

Its called the one drop rule in the US..

You have a drop of black in you, you're black.. Its hard to approach a person with obama's skin tone who happens to be mixed race and call them white..

Besides, Just look at how the election played out, From day one the question was, Can America elect a black man.. That was the question and obama had it as an obstacle.

Besides, alot of black Americans have white accestry in them because of slavery, but it is ignored because of history, the're black.

You guys are nuts. You're using scientific racism terms from Blumenbach and then distorting them. The three known types are negroid, caucasoid, mongoloid. Causcasoid is merely a nice term to mean "other." The normal term for a person of two different parents is Mulatto.

I prefer to look at these events and at Obama as American. There is nothing "color/race" related here. In 68, Robert Kennedy was the great uniter. Now, Obama has taken over the role as the uniter.
