My submission to a Linden Lab call for machinima, showing off the abilities of mesh in Second Life. This mailbox was built in Google SketchUp 7, and uploaded using the Secondlife Mesh Beta Client.

The video is short, because we were limited to one minute submissions. I didn't do any texturing or anything like that, because I wanted to simply show "it's easy". The mesh took about 15 minutes to build in SketchUp, and was exported using the free version of the software, to collada (DAE) format, then uploaded to Second Life.

It's not really much of a machinima (there's no plot or story here), more of just a 'fast motion" speed build to show the simplicity involved, both in Sketchup, and in terms of the SL Mesh uploading process. Not a particularly complex or precise build either.. I was really just trying to show "what mesh could do".

In a future video, I hope to do a bit of a simple "build and import" tutorial for how to seriously work with SketchUp with SL Meshes in mind.

  • @derKenzoo Something like that is probably 0.2 of a prim. (That would mean around 5 of them linked together would be 1 prim)

  • holyshit

  • @derKenzoo SL calculated the "Prim count " now as "Resource Cost", this cost is Dependant on the density of vertices, so you can just make a model with bazillion polygons.

  • How will SL Calculate it? Is it only one Prim? or more? Nice Vid!

  • does the model have to be a certain size example, in feet and meters?

Every single time I upload a model it comes out completely invisible.

I am guessing thats either a problem with the mesh OR its just too small or big.

  • i havent understand something yet. i made up a mesh and i uploaded on the mesh beta of sl ok np. but how i upload it on the normal sl? do i have to wait untill the next release?

  • damn thats awesome, i have to try this out :D

  • Good job, although you could really up your efficiency by learning a few shortcuts in SketchUp.

  • COOL!

  • fin ._. español! xD
