The H1N1 Vaccination Clinic Protest in San Francisco 122209

WWW.LABVIRUS.COM - I had to break after my initial visit this morning, having run out of the initial run of 400 flyers, and needing to run a few personal errands. When I returned at about 11am, the line that had previously wrapped its way almost completely around the entire block was now gone, and the sidewalks were more or less bare with only a faint trickle of people showing up to the entrance to get their H1N1 shot.

As I walked closer, I almost gave thought to bailing out on the plan to pass out more flyers, as I spotted the several armed sheriffs deputies stationed at the front entrance.

And then I heard loud bellowing from across the street its a eugenics program! and I looked and saw two people Id never seen before, passing out bright yellow flyers, and saying some of the things I had been saying to the crowd earlier. I crossed the street and joined up with new friends Mark and Patrick, who had received the email our friend-in-common sent out when I mentioned I was planning to head down there today. These two guys were great. Each of them a one-man show. Mark was on the perimiter toward the curb shouting perfectly lovely statements of fact and questions, handing out these great flyers that asked great questions on them, somehow had the labvirus.com URL printed on it along with others, and was 2-sided, bilengual. in spanish on one side.

Patrick meanwhile had a library of materials he had brought, and while carrying some of them in plastic folders and handing out his flyers, he was working people walking in at the entrance. It was beautiful. The sheriffs deputies for the most part didnt bother us at all, however later on there was one or two visibly upset deputies who we could tell did not like this first amendment freedom of speech business at all, and let us know it. We were polite, nonconfrontational, nonintrusive, and in general I though as rebel protesters we executed it totally gracefully, and responded calmly and respectfully to all the deputies requests. Later that night we found ourselves chatting it up with two of the deputies and they seemed like decent folks.
