A Whole New World [Chapter 4]

"Bad manners to stare, Joseph," Mrs. Jonas said, wiping the liquid from her shirt.

"WHY am I the only one concerned?! WHO IS THIS?! Tell me now, or I'm jumping from the car!" Joe threatened.

"Chill drama queen," the man said. "I'm Mike, the FBI Agent that's in charge of your part of the case."

"How do we know you are who you say you are?" Joe asked. "And don't bother with a badge because those can be faked."

Mike sighed, and dialed a number on his phone. "When they pick up, ask for Agent Fields."

Joe cautiously took the phone and heard someone pick up. "Federal Bureau of Investigation, how may I direct your call?" a woman asked.

Joe couldn't speak for a second. "Oh! Uh, can I speak to Agent Fields please?" he whispered.

"I'm sorry?" she asked. "I didn't catch that."

Agent Fields slapped his hand over his face. "Good Lord. Give it back to me." He put it on speakerphone. "Jenny?"

"Mike? Hi, but why are you calling me? Why didn't you just type in the extension you wanted?"

"This is important, honey. I need you to tell my assignment that I am who I say I am."

"But you ARE Agent Fields," she said, sounding confused. "Agent Mike Fields, 14 years on duty, multiple successful cases, shot once in the line of duty, but made a full recovery....."

"That's enough honey, thank you," Mike said, observing Joes face go pale. "I'll call again soon."

"Good luck," she said before disconnecting.

"Well, NOW do you believe me?" Mike asked.

"I was just kidding," Joe murmured. "You didn't have to go through all that trouble. I know you wouldn't be in here if my parents didn't know who you were."

Mike chuckled to himself as he put his phone back inside his jacket pocket. "No kid, this is actually a good lesson for you. Look, you don't know me, and I don't know you. That should change over the next 24 hours when I find out what your file doesnt tell me from you, and maybe in return I'll tell you a few things about me. But there is one thing YOU MUST get through your head right away.....YOU NEED TO TRUST ME. I do everything I do in your best interest. If I tell you to duck, I expect you to do it immediately. Where you're going, I'm going to be one of the few people you know there, let alone one of the few you can trust."

"Yes sir," Joe said, bending his head. "Sorry about earlier."

Mike sighed. "It's okay, Joe. This is scary, I understand. Your whole world has been uprooted overnight because you tried to help out a friend and it backfired worse than you ever imagined. But trust me, I will never let you at something alone, or something you're not ABSOLUTELY sure about." Mike held out his hand.

Joe shook it. "Thanks.....Mike."

"Are we all friends now? No more screaming?" Mrs. Jonas asked.

Joe smiled. "Sorry about that, Mom. When you guys said a meeting, I just assumed we were going to a police station."

Mike shook his head. "Too traceable and therefore more dangerous. No, there is another agent driving, well drive around for a few hours to have our meeting, and then be dropped off at a hotel for the night. Tomorrow you are going to your new home."

Joe sighed as he looked out the window. "Can you tell me if Cody got off okay?"

Mike smiled. "Your friend left a few hours before you did, completely fine. Well.....maybe a little tired. But he was ready to go."

"Did he say anything about me?" Joe asked.

"He said to tell you that you guys had said everything to each other last night and to not forget your promise."

Joe sighed again and put his hand on the window. "Love you too, Cody," Joe whispered, and watched the landscape go by.

Mike let him sit there and have a few moments before clearing his throat.

"WHAT?!" Joe yelled, scared again and causing his mom to jump and spill her drink again.

"HONESTLY JOSEPH!" Mrs. Jonas said, wiping herself off.

Mike and Mr. Jonas tried their best not to laugh. "Sorry Joe," Mike said. "But we really don't have time to stare out the window for hours. I only have a limited amount of time to prepare you for school tomorrow."

"SCHOOL?!" Joe yelled.

"THAT'S IT!" Mrs. Jonas yelled, throwing her glass across the limo and wiping herself off again.

"Maybe you should wait until we get to the hotel," Mr. Jonas said cautiously.

Mike rolled his eyes at them before turning back to Joe. "Yes, school. You start tomorrow."

"Really?! Aren't we only arriving there tomorrow? I figured I would have a day or two to become adjusted to my new surroundings before throwing me BACK into high school."

"Why?" Mike asked. "The best way to begin any new journey is to just jump right into it."

"A new journey...." Joe said, rolling his eyes. "I'm going BACK to high school in order to blend in to my new environment because my friend and I made the mob angry. Oh yeah, let's just jump right in."
