My second tribute video, this one to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the stand they made at Beaumont Hamel. First off, I'd like to apologize, although I wanted to and tried to use only pictures of the RNR at Beaumont Hamel, there simply wasn't enough, I also tried using only RNR pictures, but again, not enough. So I used as many as I could from the Somme offensive to show what life would have been like, the risks they would have been taking, the way they lived and such.

Secondly, please refrain from negative comments, I don't care what your nationality is, ALL countries made some sacrifice in the Great War of Civilization, this is simply a tribute to those Newfoundlanders who played their part in this horrible conflict. So don't comment about "How this regiment did better" and how "My country did soooo much more!" It wasn't up to these men where they fought. They were citizen soldiers, uniformed civilians. They had no say in the matter of where they fought. So don't bitch about how many other places your country has been.

  • To those who of you who use the word "Newfies"It's very disrespectful to say that word.Especially when your commenting on TRUE Heroes.

  • Actually...I live with a household of Newfoundlanders and every time they hear the word they're proud. As are 90% of Newfoundlanders. Whoever told you it's degrading has never met a Newfoundlander.

  • @DrDeath1020 Disagreed. As Donnie Dumphy would say, "If you're not from Newfoundland and you call me a Newfie, I'll put your fuckin' head through the back of a toonie." :)

  • @recartar I agree with Dr. Death. I'm 'newfie' and proud of it!

  • hankyou for this.

  • @DrDeath1020 i'm a Newfoundlander and I cringe whenever I hear the word "newfie." It is derogatory. You ever see a "newfie rolling pin" (it's square and can't roll), a "newfie flashlight" (it's a really long matchstick), or a "newfie coffee mug" (the handle is on the inside).

  • I've always been proud to call myself a Newfie, and recently I was shocked and saddened to hear my mother tell me that many older folk still seem to take it as the derogatory comment it once was.

I get choked up whenever I hear this song, thank you for the upload and inspiring slideshow.

  • @MatthewPeaceRocks Interesting, I have been reading this with interest, was he buried in Old Cape Broyle Cemetery?

  • Any newfoundlander would be honerd to fight in the battle

  • Today your video was shown in our English class!

And about the word "Newfie" yes some are not to keen on it but most are very proud of the word! I'm a Newfoundlander from St.John's myself, we always use the word when we talk about ourselves ^.^

  • Interesting debate over the word "Newfie", apparently to many of you fellow Newfoundlandlers have no clue how that word came about. It originated as the degrading word that the rest of Canada refereed to us as when we joined Confederation to talk about how stupid and backwards we were. It's been taken differently as have many other derogatory and racist terms but yes, its roots are entirely to put is down. Love the video, thanks!
