It's because if your an immigrant from Krypton it's fine. Same with Sweden, Canada, the UK. Heaven forbid he were from India or China or whatever. Basically, cos he's white! He could be from Pluto and it wouldn't matter (bad analogy, as there's a high chance people from Pluto would be white anyway!)

More recently, though, in the anniversary issue, Superman has renounced his American citizenship, because he's afraid that as a global superhero, people will associate him with enforcing America's rules/values. BUT even getting rid of citizenship, he was still brought up with not only American values, but MIDWEST American values, the "rednecks" that pro-illegal types love to make fun of! He has never allowed "Cultural Relativism" to stop him from upholding the right and stopping the wrong!

Did you ever think his acceptance is because he enforces the law, rather than stirring up people to protest over their "right" to BREAK the law?

As pointed out in one of the movies (And most the comics/cartoons), people with power could easily break the law, and take the illegals' "What're you gonna do about it" attitude, noone could stop them. BUT they CHOOSE to not only follow the law, but ENFORCE them!

Notice, though, that they took out "American Way" from Superman's oath in the Returns movie

I like the idea but big problem behind doing something like that is mixing real world politics with superheroes almost never works out well. When you get down to it the core concept of a superhero, a super powered individual that fights crime from behind a veil of secrecy is a fascist wet dream. We can suspend our disbelief and distance the man of steel and the dark knight from the totalitarian ideals they represent as long as we keep them isolated from real world issues.
