I think the computerized voice makes it slightly worse. I remember hearing these as a child - pretty frequently, too, as we had cable & we'd get local weather alerts - & I'd run into my kitchen screaming & hide in the cabinets, haha

@lalapubpub According to the EBS's wiki page, the sound frequency combination of the EBS alert tone was designed to be disharmonious to the human ear
-
@powerpup97 the tone is so horrible that the first thing I would do is to switch off the receiver !

check out test by Prong!

check out the ''1080 snowboarding'' soundtrack, made this into a song :)
-
@MrCopyrightViolator I distinctly remember running and hiding behind my grandparents' couch every time one came on
-
Announcers such as Frank Avruch, Tom Evans, Meg Levigne & Dana Hersey were what made Boston tv fun to watch back in the day.
-
@dft432 The announcers are nothing these days. I nearly crap myself whenever I get an alert.
-
The WLVI v/o announcer (back in the 80s) made the test spiel more dramatic before the infamous tone sounded.
-
@dft432 Try an EAS test on comcast today. Watching normal TV, your entire screen goes black and you hear a 1050Hz tone, and your ears bleed horribly.
These really scared me when I was a kid...
