What normally is an 8 hour bus trip from Puerto Princesa to the El Nido at the northern tip of Palawan island (in the Philippines), turns into an 11 hour bone shaking experience during the rainy season. Especially when at some stage the bus started skidding in the mud (most of the roads are mud rather than roads) and then toppled over into the ditch, nicely shaking all passengers (3 to a seat) and piling them up on top of each other. Wonder oh wonder - nobody got hurt. We did get wet though waiting an hour in the rain for help to pull the bus back on track - and we just continued the trip in a mud smothered bus. As if it is the most normal thing in life...

  • The road between Puerto Princesa and El Nido needs to be fixed ASAP. We were there last July and it took us 9 hours. Our van got stuck in almost knee deep mud twice. Good thing there were good samaritans who were willing to help us pull the van from the mud.
