Berkeley Rep presents the world premiere comedy You, Nero, which The New York Times calls "gloriously funny." The notorious emperor Nero commands a washed-up writer to create an spectacular show to whitewash his corrupt regime. But to stage the script, the poor hack has to survive the real spectacle at the palace--murdering mistresses, a controlling mother, singing eunuchs, and plotting politicians.
Sharon Ott directs this smart and sassy show, as beloved actor Danny Scheie portrays the preposterous king. In You, Nero, playwright Amy Freed lets loose the tigers on a crumbling empire obsessed with shallow celebrities, violent sports and sensational entertainment. When Rome unravels like its reality TV, everyone wants to get in the emperors new clothes.
Can't tell from this, but lack of a set - even an unnaturalistic one - hurts.
