China space program advances with first spacewalk

Chinese astronaut Zhai Zhigang performed the nation's first spacewalk on September, 27, 2008. With the 15-minute spacewalk, China became the third country to master the extravehicular activity (EVA) technology following the United States and Russia.

The Shenzhou-7 space module carrying three Chinese taikonauts Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng landed safely back on earth on September 28, 2008 from historic space walk mission

Next, China aims to build a ``simple'' space laboratory in 2011 and a manned space station by 2020 and land a man on the moon, possibly ahead of NASA's 2020 target date for returning to the moon.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Eugene Aldrin from US became the first humans to land on the Moon during Apollo 11 mission.

Both Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain support space programs as a way to boost the US's position as a technology innovator.

The first EVA was carried out by Alexey Leonov on March 18, 1965 from the Voskhod 2 spacecraft.

On June 3, 1965 astronaut Ed White completed the first U.S. spacewalk.

In 2003 China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space aboard the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft.
