Her name may not ring a bell, but her sons book, A BLACK MANS TRIBUTE TO HIS WHITE MOTHER, was on the NEW YORK TIMES best seller list for 100 weeks. Ruth, an Orthodox Jewish woman, was twice married to a black man. Her first husband died leaving her with eight children. She raised those eight children for fifteen years alone, arranging for them to be bused to better schools. With her second husband, she had four more kids, prior to his death. All twelve children graduated from college. Two are doctors, two professors, two teachers, two engineers, a finance director, a social worker, a nurse, and a journalist, make up the dozen. Mother McBride, herself, earned a social work degree from Temple University at 65. Questions about racial identity were always answered the same. Mom would only say, Im light skinned. she ignored stares, snide comments and cackles. All that really mattered to her was her kids and their education. There is no power great than the force of a mothers will and a strong public education system.

I know this problem too, then i been married to a black man from texas since 1982 .The time is better now with black and white copples, but its still sometime difficuilti.....why i didnt know...Sorry about my english , i am from Germany.

  • whats up with her face.. anywho... the book was wonderfully written and james mcbride's story, laid side by side with his mother's story, was just inspirational. From the autobiography, you can clearly see that Ruth McBride was a great person, and that played a role in her raising twelve successful children. Although u cant always say that successful children automatically gives the parent credit and labels the parent as a good one, in this case, you can. i applaud the mcbride family.

  • The book was incredible...

  • @rockguyjw

It's mine too and, after reading the book for at least ten times since I first purchased it, I finally sent a Thank You to James McBride this week. I was thrilled to receive a personal reply but saddened to learn, this morning , that Ruth passed away in Jan 2010. What a legacy she left the world.

  • With the exception of All Quiet On The Western Front, this is the best book I've ever read
