I was thinking it was a perch, but it could be.

is that a small peacock bass??

@deathfrets no there is no way to stop a snake from musking you. If you really want a friendly garter snake, go buy a captive bred one. They are commonly available in the hobby and are much less inclined to musk you. Most of them will not eat mice right out of the wild, their natural diet includes worms, fish, tadpoles and frogs.

@jupy921 finally i can find a herper that lives in maine like myself
Finally! Someone else besides me who 1) knows that wild water snakes are not always nasty. and 2) they will eat right out of your hands moments after capture. I've done it myself! If the snake had been captured WHILE feeding, it surely would have spit the fish out in fright. They also like to regurgitate their stomach contents and poop on you :) I own many water snakes and garter snakes. Garter snakes will also eat out of your hands after being picked up, especially if you offer an amphibian!

Thank you for confirming my claims. I can understand people being hesitate to believe B.S, but I didn't think this concept was going to be that difficult of a sell. I love watersnakes, they are by far my favorite snake species. And you are correct, if I had captured that snake while it was eating it would have spit that fish right out. But if you catch them, gentle like, and offer them food, nearly every one I've tried it on, will accept dead fish right from your hand. Which is darn cool!

Interesting video. I rescued one of these snakes from our pool skimmer at the end of this last summer.
Very small one, probably not 8" in length, I'd never seen one before and actually thought it was a moccasin, they've got stocky bodies as well.
Last time I saw it, it was heading out under the fence for the woods.

People often mistake these for water moccasins, and they do live in the same areas and look a bit alike. It would benefit the watersnake to look like a moccasin, and critters would tend to avoid that. I give you kudos for saving the little guy, too many people think the only good snake is a dead snake, and that is just sad.
