Promo for Oxford band The Bigger The God. Though it cost less than £100 to make it did get a play on Top of the Pops on the BBC. More stuff on the band can be found at

The Bigger the God flirt casually with Vaudeville, Burlesque and plain old camp drama to weave mini-operas peopled by sleazoids and weirdo's. If you can get over the intial shock of the concept, you may find there's some decadent fun to be had with David Cowles-Hamar's swooping theatrical voice."
Martin O'Gorman, '...And the Ugly' album review, Record Collector, March 2000. "'...And the Ugly' is a little beauty."
Andy Basire, '...And the Ugly' album review, Making Music, January/February 2000. "I could go on. I will go on. Variety is a breathtaking liberty-taking dash through 20 years of pop music. There's five singles on it already, and eight more waiting. it's not a Variety pack, it's a greatest hits-to-be. It's all Coco Pops and no Bran. It's a hit!"
Mark Luffman, Variety album review, Melody Maker, 9th November 1996. "The Goddies are an endearingly off-kilter offshoot of the British ill-fitting scene, where charity shop chic collides with healthy cynicism."
Simon Williams, On Piece, NME, 16th October 1996. "Exhaustingly good. A tune that would make the dead jig."
Jennifer Nine, 'Mum Steals Boyfriend' single review, Melody Maker, 8th June 1996. "The Bigger the God bloom as surprisingly beautiful as a lily from an apple pip."
Mark Luffman, live review, Melody Maker 6th January 1996. "Marvelously affected vocals and a witty, painful, familiar lyric."
Lee Fisher, 'Miss Pritchard' single review, Music Week 2nd December 1995.
I'm sure the lead singer used to sell me veg, in the greengrocers in Summertown. Am I right?

I remember scouring music shops to buy this on vinyl. I was pretty sure they'd be the next big thing. Shame they didn't make it as this tune is fantastic.

Really good, this song. Why, I wonder, didn't TBTG make it big? They're certainly one of the best English bands I've heard in the last ten years.

Gartcosh37: I seem to recall it was Shotover Hill. Although how I've remembered that after 13-odd years, i have no idea....

A very underated song. Does anyone know on what hill the band play on at the end of this video?

Still the best band to ever come out of Oxford - spent many nights thrashing around the Zodiac and the Jericho Tavern to this lot. Thanks for sticking this one up!
