10 Mental Toughness Tips http://www.TeenMentalToughness.com/2011/11/how-to-develop-mental-toughness/

1. A winner is a dreamer who never quits.

Every top athlete will tell you that they had to dig deep, at times, to keep going when they were tired or things got difficult . What is it about you and WHAT YOU WANT that motivates you to never, ever, ever, give up? Write that down on a 3x5 card and keep it by your bed and look at it every day.

2. Talent is a myth.

It's determination and heart that makes a winner. You are always going to be tested. You can WANT to achieve a goal very badly but when it comes down to it, you have to find that CORE "YOU" that you have already used in the past, to blast through limitations. At a minimum, when you were a baby, you used that willpower energy to learn how to walk and talk. It's there...you MUST believe you have it. Use that force inside you to overcome anything and get yourself to the next level.

3. Competition DEMANDS mental toughness and preparedness.

Teen athletes must look at competition as a GRAND OPPORTUNITY to showcase how much work they've put into practice and training. You cannot get to a College or Professional level of sport without TOTALLY COMMITTING yourself to this process. There is no easy way in sports....or life! You cannot let distractions or others wanting you to "hang out" keep you from your commitment.

4. Toughness comes from COMING BACK after falling, getting beat up and making mistakes.

It's easy to pretend to be "mentally tough" when you are winning and doing well. Confidence comes easy then. The real champions learn how to take adversity and setbacks and turn them into powerful lessons to build off of. There is no such thing as failure, only quitting.

5. In sports, the winner is one who can take the most pain, physical and emotional.

If you are going to compete in sports, you are making a decision to ACCEPT that PAIN is part of the deal. It's that very PAIN you endure that makes winning so sweet and amazing! Pushing yourself beyond your comfort level is an investment in the payoff of feeling that win for a long time. Ask anyone who has won and they will tell you that all the pain was more than worth it.

6. Winners are PASSIONATE and emotional.

Why is there such a thing as "home team advantage?" Both teams play on the same court or field and yet, throughout all sports, it is a fact that home teams win more often. This comes from you sending energy out into the crowd, your team, your opponent in subtle and loud ways that YOU INTEND TO WIN! Confidence is an emotion. Winner's are emotional but they have MASTERED THEIR EMOTIONS and so they know how to make them work for themselves!

7. You cannot afford to shrink under pressure.

How an athlete handles pressure is the hallmark of a champion. Start pre-living pressure situations in your mind every day so that when it happens for real, you are mentally prepared. Do not wait until the actual game or event to do something about pressure, you will not be prepared and the pressure could overcome you.

8. Make a DECISION and a DECLARATION that you are tough enough.

The most successful athletes (and people outside of sports) take a stand and back it up. They might just decide quietly to themselves or do it loudly and publicly. Either way, this sets a chain of events in motion for CONSISTENT action that follows. Use the power of DECISION to keep you moving toward your goals.

9. Winner's know how to find that "extra" push to finish at the end.

So many games and matches are won right at the end in sports. Winner's develop their mind so that they clear away the junk that prevents that last little bit of personal power coming through when it is needed most...at crunch time. Practice pulling this up in your workouts and training and you will be able to do it in competition.

10. Every opponent is beatable. Miracles happen every day in sports.

Stop comparing yourself to your opponent. Nobody is unbeatable. If an opponent is favored to win, then you have the advantage of being the underdog with nothing to lose by going all out. You always have the advantage in your mind when you are mentally tough.
