January 23, 2012, the Hawaii State Legislature held a conference meeting on House Bill 608 titled, "Kidney; Liver; Transplants; Appropriation," relating to Health. The Committee Conferees recommended that the bill be passed with amendments. The Conference draft of the bill will now go to the Senate and House Chambers for voting.

If enacted, the bill would appropriate $1.8 million dollars to the Department of Health to support a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services-certified kidney and liver transplant facility in Hawaii, as well as to maintain a federally-recognized stage 3 chronic kidney disease program focused on prevention for disparate populations in Hawaii. One-point-5 million dollars of the appropriation will go to Queen's Medical Center for the kidney transplant program and $300,000 will go to the National Kidney Foundation for supportive services.
