05/27/2010 - Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) co-CEO Sanjay Jha spoke to investors at a conference sponsored by Barclays Capital Thursday, announcing that the company will continue to focus on Google Inc's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android OS platform to compete in the smart phone market against competitors Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).
Motorola has introduced several devices onto Google's Android OS platform and is set to launch more later this year.
"I would say that OS alone is not what consumers base their decision on, though it has become meaningfully more important," Jha said. "The look and feel of the device still matters."
Jha was asked about how Motorola will remain unique in the smart phone market, where the BlackBerry and iPhone dominate as the top-sellers in the U.S.; analysts chalk this success to the smart phones' integrated operating systems.
Jha spoke of Motorola's choice to go with Google's Android OS to develop its smart phone family, and launched the Droid handset in 2009, followed by the Cliq and Backflip.
The Backflip was launched through AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) so it provides direct competition to Apple's iPhone.
Shares of Motorola are trading up 1.92% at $6.87.
