I think the confusion is coming from the original score. The first person to perform this role was a soprano as listed on the original playbill but in subsequent years is when it became customary to have this performed as a mezzo role. Mezzos specialized in those roles often and could perform it well so it just stuck.
"Voi che sapete" is one of the more difficult arias in the mezzo-soprano repertoire. A true soprano would never sing this aria in an audition--it's inappropriate (this is a generally accepted rule internationally). Although sopranos have sung the role before, it remains mostly a mezzo-soprano role.
The term "Soprano 1" is never used when referring to specific opera roles--it is a choral term. It is also the highest female part. Soprano 2 is the lower, then Alto 1 and Alto 2, respectively.
Actually I belive the part is sung by a female SOPRANO 1, the 1st/second-to-lowest "zone" of soprano singing. I am a soprano "1.5" you might say, and my mum is an alto 1, so thay always picked her for guy singing parts (no guys wanted to sing).
Same with Peter Pan. It was always a female on Broadway, the reason being that a man's voice would be too low for a young boy's voice, even if the man was a tenor singer
acyually its in italian, and no thats not a countertenor, she is a suprano, Cherubino is what is called a trouser role, the performer is female though the character is male, the reason for it in this case is that Cherubino is a prepubesent boy who's voice has yet to change and therefore is still high
It's a beautiful aria no matter who sings it.
