I want to make sure that all who watch this video know I'm not taking credit for filming this video. New Georgia Steam Excursions, from Pentrex is the video Im sharing this from. I have no intent of infringing on somebodys copyright. I only wish to share these clips with fellow railfans who appreciate these shots for what they are. From what I can find after over a year of searching there isnt any footage available to the public of 290 while she was running so as long Ill share these clips for as long as I can.

Now that I've placed my disclaimer, here we go:

This is part 1 of 5 of the excursion A&WP 290 ran from Atlanta, Ga to Montgomery, Al. This was the first (& I Believe last) time the locomotive ran on her home rails. This is also a special occurrence seeing that 290 is wearing her original whistle that she wore while carrying the Crescent between Atlanta and Montgomery. This trip, locomotive & rail line hold a special place in my heart seeing that the A&WP (now CSX A&WP Subdivision) are my home rails and if you look at any of my recent videos youll see that the A&WP is my primary railfaning line that I was born & raised on. The other significance to this trip is that this is the last time I saw mainline steam running. Its been over 17 years now and, like most of us, Id love to hear a whistle once more.

On a rainy August 21, 1992 A&WP 290 takes her train out of Atlanta, Ga and onto her home rails of the A&WP. The train is shown here between Atlanta & La Grange, Ga.

I hope you enjoy this footage as much as I have.

  • But this is the locomotive protagonist of the film "Green fried tomatoes"?

  • Close but not quite. The title of the movie was Fried Green Tomatoes. but yes it is the same locomotive. The difference between what you see/ hear in this video and what's in the movie is the whistle. In the movie the locomotive is "wearing" a higher pitched Southern whistle. The whistle seen/ heard here is the locomotives origional whistle.

  • Hopefully the Southeastern Railway Museum will restore her soon. They have plans to restore her and get 2 1/2 miles of track.

  • You wonder why insurance costs are so high? Look at all of those people on BOTH tracks as the train rolls in. It's a miracle another freight train doesn't come rolling through at that time...

  • Steam on CSX? Ha, ha, that would never happen now. There was a time when CSX actually permitted steam, up until 1994 or so. Was this a special extended mileage excursion, similar to Norfolk Southern's steam excursions?

  • My grandfather Q E Martin was the US Postal service mail car senior employee for the A&WP Steam engine. 290 pulled the Southern Crescent route from Atlanta to Montgomery, AL portion and on to New Orleans. 290 was refurbished to running condition in about 1990 and ran the Atlanta circle dinner train route and to Stone Mountain also from Underground Atlanta. She sits idle now in Duluth Ga's railroad museum in a covered building. It costs too much to kep her running. 3 or 4 videos exist for her.

  • ah this brings back memories of my younger years going to Atlanta to visit my aunt and uncle there and going to ride the New Georgia Railroad I loved seeing the 290 I miss the 750 too and I see the il fated American Europian Express cars in that consist interesting ah the good old days of going to Atlanta remembering and seeing the closeing days of the Southern Railroad and early NS not to mention early CSX mixed bag of locomotives in a train LOL

  • 290 carried two different whistles in FGT. In the scenes that were filmed in Julliette, GA on the Norfolk Southern main, she carried the steamboat whistle from Southern Ps4 #1378. In the scenes filmed in Senoia on the Central of Georgia (namely the the scene where Buddy Threadgood gets run over and the scene in which Buddy Jr looses an arm), she carried at Central of Georgia 5-chime.

  • She will be cosmetically restored for now, and SRM currently does not have plans for 2 1/2 miles of track.

  • ah ok, in the movie is a horn and not a whistle? Why was changed the original whistle? (Excuse my english not good)
