ROD KNOCK!!! What it looks like inside the engine. How to determine if you have rod knock by taking off the oil pan. This car is a 1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5 liter. The oil circuit for cylinder one got a piece of foil blocking it. The connecting rod on that cylinder died an ignominious death.

Hi Brian. I got an intermittent coming from the top end of my engine. It does not start until the engine warms up. the cylinder head was replaced and the noise is still there. Could an loose bearing cause a rattle on the top of the engine even though I would expect the sound coming from the bottom of the engine?

That's a HUUUUUGE amount of play in the rod bearing. I'm really surprised that the motor didn't throw the rod.

@pocoapoco2 The owner really babied it- keeping it in a certain RPM range. I drove a car from central Canada to the middle of the US on a nasty rod knock. I had to listen to the engine and keep it right in around 1700 RPM. Right around there it was actually pretty quiet.
