Chewing Gum would not have been a hit it it hadn't been played by Boston DJ Arnie Ginsberg on WMEX . It had been out for a long time and died until he picked it up and started playing it and then it just blossmed into a US smash.

I used to stay past my bedtime to hear it on one of the stations in Toledo....thought it was the greatest song of all-time then!!!!

This song was a big hit one summer around 1960. I was surprised later to learn Lonnie Donegan had a big influence on the Beatles who said so themselves. Makes sense when you hear other things by Lonnie. Thank God for Youtube.

@harponercam This is the one from the 60s, I can attest to that :) Was just reminded of Lonnie Donegan the other day by a friend and suddenly all the words to this song came to mind.

I heard this song when I was four and have since heard many other renditions, but this one is still my favorite.
