http://fatnews.com/ Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ FatNews.com.
Hypothyroidism reduces the number and activity of mitochondria, the energy-producing cells, notes Mark Starr, MD, author of the wonderful book Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic.
Mitochondria make up one-third of the weight of the heart muscle, Dr. Starr notes in this short audio clip from a speech he gave in 2007 at an Orthomolecular Conference.
This appears to the connection as to how hypothyroidism can cause some forms of congestive heart failure where the heart muscle is too weak to pump enough blood to the rest of the body (cardiomyopathy). It's an energy problem.
Dr. Starr's book contains the wonderful "Before" and "After" pictures showing X-rays of enlarge hearts that shrink back to normal size after the patient is given natural desiccated thyroid.
A decrease in mitochondria also appears to be the connection of hypothyroidism to Alzheimer's, which Dr. Starr noted in another audio clip. Again, it's an energy problem.
Why Not Try Desiccated Thyroid First?
Why not try natural desiccated thyroid first for all of these conditions?
Why not give natural desiccated thyroid a try for all of these conditions? It seems like a low-risk idea—a large potential benefit by doing this, with very little risk.
If it were me, I would try natural desiccated thyroid for all of these conditions before trying anything else:
Alzheimer's Disease
Fertility Problem
Menstrual Problems
Congestive Heart Failure
Depression
Fatigue / Chronic Fatigue
Elevated cholesterol
Elevated blood pressure
Pain
Skin problems / Acne
Headaches / Migraines
Hypoglycemia
Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.)
The audio is from a speech Dr. Starr gave at a 2007 Orthomolecular Conference.
------
My research shows that many chronic illnesses including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, mental illnesses, Alzheimer's disease, and the explosion of childhood illnesses are largely attributable to Type 2 hypothyroidism.
Type 1 Hypothyroidism is defined as failure of the thyroid gland to produce sufficient amounts of necessary to maintain normal blood levels of those hormones and normal blood levels of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).
Type 2 Hypothyroidism is defined as [a] resistance to thyroid hormones at the cellular level.
[In Type 2 hypothyroidism,] Normal amounts of thyroid hormones and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) are detected by the blood tests therefore, blood tests do not detect Type 2 hypothyroidism.

Dr Mark Starr
I appreciate all this information and you have a great treasure trove of knowledge, but I must confess, hearing you say "why not try this first" in varying highs and lows really got to me :)
I'm going to be seeing Dr. Starr soon, however I really hope he has a vegan/vegetarian option to help me. Great job, keep up the great work!

@kaumudee Thanks for your nice comment. I appreciate it. I posted these to try and convince my parents to have my mother try desiccated thyroid as well as natural treatments used by Joan Mathews Larson. My mother struggled with depression for 50 years. All the doctors did was give her drugs and more drugs but it only made things worse. I'd like to convince both doctors and patients to "try this first" Both my parents died 5 months ago two weeks apart. Hopefully others will be helped. Larry Hobbs

@larryshobbs I'm really anti-anti-depressants. I think it's the worst possible thing someone can do to their body. I'm sorry for your loss - I hope others can take away from this and help themselves before it's too late for them!

@kaumudee Thank you. I have become much more anti-drugs in the past 4 years watching how drugs devastated my mother's life. Dr. Mercola did an interview with author Robert Whitaker who told how antidepressants are NOT very effective, they convert a short-term illness into a chronic problem, increase the risk of converting someone from depression to manic-depression, are not "normalizing agents", but instead are "abnormalizing agents", REDUCE serotonin levels, and DECREASE serotonin receptors. I have been on natural thyroid (Armour 120mg) for 3 years, prior to that I had been on Synthroid or Levoxyine since 1989. I wish I could say there has been a change in my symtoms, but there is not. I'm still losing hair, nail break constantly, sleep problems, still gaining weight, tired, joint pain, high cholesterol. Now what? I have been to so many doctors, they blame it on menopause, but my symtoms have always been the same.

@krayze8 Sorry to hear that.
In another video clip, Dr. Starr notes that the average dose of desiccated thyroid in his hypothyroid patients is 200-233 mg per day -- 3 to 3.5 grains.
Dr. Starr also notes that famous Belgium endocrinologist, Jacques Hergoghe, MD noted that the average dose in his patients was the same -- 200-233 mg.
If you'd like a copy of Hertoghe's study, just email me at larryshobbs [AT] gmail.com.
I would also email Dr. Starr and ask his advice.
