Canteloube -- Chants D'Auvergne, set 3
"Lo fiolairé (La fileuse)"
French composer Joseph Canteloube (1897-1957) is best known for his arrangements of French folk songs, like Chants D'Auvergne. Canteloube had a great love for his country and the land around him. He grew up in the region of Auvergne, but travelled around France collecting folk songs from different regions. These folk songs were then arranged for a variety of instruments and voices. Chants D'Auvergne is his most well known work and was written for soprano and piano or orchestra.
Extremely well written, the orchestra accompaniment provides support to the skillful display of the soprano voice. Frequently, word painting can be heard in the accompaniment: where the spindle is mentioned in the text of the first piece, the accompaniment also has a "spinning" figure. There are five groups of the folk songs. The text is in the Occitan dialect, and the French translation of the title is above in parenthesis.
