This is a short review about running the final version of Windows 7 Professional on my 4 month old Eee PC.
I recently, like 2 weeks ago, installed Win7 Final I got from Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) on my 1000HE and because I almost found no info about the system running on it beforehand so I thought giving a little advice to those considering to install Windows 7 on their netbook.
The installation works fine. You will need 2 or 3 drivers for Windows 7, so I posted a link later in the description you could get them (link is german, but website is english). The System is running right away without any external drivers. Wireless, bluetooth, LAN, camera and smartpad was working with the built-in drivers, so you can install the rest from the internet. You will be noticed from Windows Update with some drivers like Intel graphics after the first bootup, so no need to look for them.
I additionally installed the ACPI-driver for using the function keys and getting the tray utility, the smartpad multitouch-driver and the Superhybrid Engine from http://downloads.k0k0.de/ . I am not sure anymore if they were all Win7 drivers, could be some Vista. If there are no Win7, I had no problems installing Vista ones. I use the eeectl utlity running in admin-mode at bootup to keep my fan quiet as well as being able to boost the brightness of the screen, working perfectly fine.
I still use my EeePC in stock configuration: 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Atom N280
The system is a bit pricy compared to the cheap price of the netbook but looks so much better and works great, I would never change back. There is really no drawback in using Windows 7 Professional. It is a bit slower in Video performance, but its not a Media Center anyway.
FYI the smartpad-driver and ACPI-Driver I needed for Win7 from http://downloads.k0k0.de/ . Awesome webpage that has all u need for netbooks. Thanks for that, hope they get high traffic from my vid =)
I just ordered one of these. You're right it's pretty cheap. but perfect for a bit of movie watching.
I think Win7 maybe too much though. Like you said, the neat graphics make it a little slower than on XP right?
did you try playing the star trek 720p trailer on XP before you upgraded to W7?
If so, then was it as choppy or was it smoother on XP?

video performance was much better on XP, actually the star trek trailer ran smooth, I kinda was a little surprised that it was so laggy ... Win7 would definitly benefit from another 1GB of ram obviously the onboard graphic card will get more power from that ... but playing HD movies on it isnt what I am doing, so I dont care about a little less video performance, its by far enough for doing my regular stuff, looks so much nicer and has some pretty nice functions that makes using easier
