One of the most profound events of my youth was the tragedy of the space shuttle Challenger, which exploded 72 seconds after take-off on January 28, 1986. My first and greatest dream has always been to journey into space, and the shuttle disaster affected me on a sub-atomic level. The fact that teacher Krista Mcauliffe was making her first historic trip adds to the weight of that cold blue day in January.
This video is an experiment in spontaneous emotional construction on the 22nd anniversary of the Challenger's last flight. The apropos, poetic title is from a unique 1981 Russian science fiction film directed by Richard Viktorov. The evocative music by Tangerine Dream is a rare piece called "The 31st Floor" from their soundtrack to KAMIKAZE 1989.

  • Great tribute, but why is their a picture of the crew of STS-107 at 0:16. That was another sad event but is just looks a little out of place.

  • You're right. I didn't notice until later. If I can re-edit it soon I will.

  • I agree granddad2002. There legacy shall live on.

  • If America stops manned exploration, then all astronauts and cosmonauts who have died... would truly have died for nothing. that would be the worse tragedy.

  • Thank you....

  • yup, on 0:16 it is the crew of STS-107 Columbia who all died during re-entry...Search it on google STS-107 Columbia zekshoes was right..

  • this is a lovely tribute Christian. I remember that day too. I thought the music was perfect and you have some remarkable images, especially at 1:24 seconds in.

  • Like September 11th I know where I was when Challenger exploded. A little mistake in your description -> Kamikaze 1989 not 88 :) Regards
