US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met on Wednesday, March 16, with Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, head of the Egyptian Supreme Military Council (SMC), the country's temporary ruling authority, in Cairo, where they discussed the developments on the Egyptian and Arab arenas and the ways to support Egypt during the current transitional period.
The US and Egyptian sides addressed the ways to enhance bilateral relations after the ousting of the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak, a longtime US ally who resigned the presidency on February 11 under the pressure of the January Revolution, ending his 30-year rule.
They also exchanged views on how to stabilize the region in light of the turmoil in a number of Arab countries, particularly Libya, Bahrain and Yemen.
Observers believe that a new leadership in Cairo is likely to maintain the strong relation with the US due to various strategic interests that the two countries have in common.
