Clips on the reign of Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch. The clips concern Henry's war with France, the Cornish Rebellion of 1497; Perkin Warbeck; Henry's financial measures and his increasing unpopularity.

In regards to the pretender Warbeck, there was another person who attempted to lay a claim to the throne. This person, Lambert Simnel, alleged at first to also be the young prince Richard. However when he heard that the Earl of Warwick (the nephew of Edward IV and Richard III) had died (which was not true), he claimed to be Warwick. He gained support in Ireland and even financial aid from Margaret of Burgundy who was sister to Richard III and unsurprisingly was not fond of Henry VII. However he and his troops were defeated in 1487. Henry pardoned him and Simnel went on to work in the royal kitchens!

An important measure employed by Henry VII was the use of attainders. Basically, attainders were placed upon those who had committed treason and meant that their land and titles were confiscated by the crown. Hence the crown made a nice profit. Henry employed this on his enemies to increase the royal coffers. It was also used as an incentive for others to behave!

Henry increased the royal coffers and left for his son a considerable inheritance. However one of Henry VIII's first acts as king was to imprison his father's chief financial advisers -- Edmund Dudley and Sir Richard Empson. They were both executed in 1510 to the joy of much of the nobility. Coincidentally, Edmund Dudley's son, John Dudley would become the Duke of Northumberland who would help place Jane Grey on the throne in July 1553. Edmund's grandson was Robert Dudley, Elizabeth I's long term favourite.

  • Awesome as usual!

  • Thanks!

  • Oh my god, is this yet ANOTHER Starkey TV documentary?! How many of these has he done, lol? Is this just on Henry VII?

  • It's from a documentary I have posted before. I've just split the sections up instead of posting the whole thing.

  • i love Starkey!!! I hope he never retires, because asking him to never die is a bit too much.

  • I'm a staunch Richard III defender, but I can't help but wonder how drastically diffrent the world would be had he won Bosworth.

  • I love Starkey, but aren't The Princes in the Tower "uncles" to Henry VIII and not "cousins"?) Since his mother - Elizabeth of York was their sister...

  • Henry VII did not want England's Treasury to show debt during his reign, so he stole gold from Spain, via France. Part of the anger of the Spanish Armada was suspicion. Henry VIII also made use of this swindle. They tried to set things up so it would appear to be the fault of Elizabeth I, if ever discovered, which was unfair, because her reign was pristine.

  • I thought Henry VII did some things like every monarch, and he tried to restore England back to it's glory, and he helped his people, too bad his son, Henry VIII didn't follow his example. Quoting from my Tudor England Professor. And I love Starkey, he has that voice that's just awesome and engaging.

  • Thank you littlemisssunnydale for posting this video. Pity but because of his glorious son Henry VIII and great granddaughter Elizabeth I is Henry VII a little bit "neglected" by historians. I think i am a little bit paranoid- because i like Richard III my way but i cannot help myself to adore and respect Henry VII Tudor. I think he and only he is the first founder of modern England...later Great Britain. He finally was more ruler than warrior on the throne of England.

  • Yes, he was definitively one of the greatest Kings which ever ruled England. I like him as a human because of his ability to survive hardest times of parentless childhood and tough years of exile. But i adore him as a monarch too. Exactly because of the reasons you have described above. Great man worthy respect and let me say a sort of gratitude.

  • I think Henry VII was a great King. He established a dynasty and put an end to many years of futile war.

What he achieved in 24 years was no less than to lay down the foundations of modern Great Britain. He slammed shut the door on the Middle Ages and began the renaissance.

He was also the best businessman ever to sit on the English thone.

  • Henry wasn't a great King the man spent his reign worrying and being paranoid. He kills Edward of Clarence who suffered from a form of learning dis and proved to many that his actions surrounding the princes were suspicious. The man never formally charged Richard but had done anything to slander Richard in every other aspect.

  • thanks lil Miss!

    XoXX

  • The treaty of Etaples with France removed Perkin Warbeck from france.
