AVG does a great job as a free anti-virus, only downside is no rootkit scan.

The interface of Avast! looks like a music player and might get hard to used to at first, but afterwards it is an anti-virus like all the others.

ThreatFire 4.1 Free: http://www.threatfire.com/download/
Have you disabled UAC on Vista because it annoys you when you rename or move a file? ThreatFire will not ask you to cancel or allow when doing simple stuff, but it's Realtime protection suspects supicious activity.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?...
It removes malware completely, even removes Anti-Virus XP 2008/2009, and comes with a nice tool called FileAssassin, which deletes locked files. This basic edition is only missing Realtime-protecton.

Here is my recommendation, watch in HD and put it on full screen, what makes you can't see the text? It is very clear when it is on both HD and full screen.
