Three local doctors packed up their scalpels and other gear Thursday and began their journey to Haiti to assist in the relief and humanitarian efforts, one month after the earthquake destroyed the Caribbean nation.
The doctors include an emergency room physician and two surgeons.
The trio loaded up a truck with medical supplies and left for the airport. They will be spending a week in Fort Liberte caring for about 1,500 Haitians. They expect to perform at least 100 surgeries a day.
"These people really don't have much and they're in a really bad situation right now," said Dr. Jason Levine, an orthopedic surgeon. "There's a great need for somebody with my education and my background to go and help, so I think by me offering my time and my services to them, it's the least that I could do."
Fort Liberte is about 150 kilometers northeast of Port-Au-Prince.
