A quintessential bit of Sixties sleaze. Certain pop stars just don't have the sex appeal to make it on the silver screen. Case in point: Neil Sedaka, the talented songwriter whose extremely high voice (thanks, SCTV) and broadly effeminate demeanor prevented him from becoming the next Elvis (or the next Frankie Avalon, or the next Fabian). This sequence of three scenes comes from the 1968 film (you will swear it's 1963, and it's more than likely pre- the Summer of Love) "Playgirl Killer."

The film stars actor William Kerwin, better known to sleaze fans as the star of several early films by the immortal Herschell Gordon Lewis, including the milestone gore pic "Blood Feast." Here Kerwin plays a homicidal artist who gets hired as a handyman by a spoiled rich chick. A side-plot introduces Sedaka, one of the most ineffectual "rock singer" leads in movie history ("I just wanted to help!"). In this scene, a rich bitch taunts Neil, who's engaged to her cutie-pie lil sis.

I love Neil's music, but he is quite effeminate. Some men choose to live a lie for a lifetime. My partner was married for 10 years, and has two sons in their 30's now. So being married and having children does not necessarily mean you're straight.

I don't know whether he is gay or straight, but I was a store clerk at the old Polk's Hobbies on 5th Avenue and 32nd Street in New York in the '70s and I waited on Sedaka one time just before Christmas.

He was dressed in a hot pink jumpsuit with a matching floppy broad brimmed hat.

He was effeminate as all hell.

That didn't bother me, What bothered me is that I spent over an hour showing him one item after another and he left without buying anything,

I don't understand why people choose to concentrate solely on Sedaka's demeanor and appearance, and not on his talent as a singer. Come on you biting people this is 2011-the 21st century.

It's strange that women with deep voices aren't thought of as being manly, yet men with soft voices are considered sissy. I know several men with soft voices and are not sissy or gay. It's sad some people think that way, but they do. You miss out on a lot of friendships because of this small way of thinking.

My point is to deflect the criticism of Sedaka being gay when he's NOT. Sedaka is squarely  in the heterosexual camp. He may be effeminate as all get out but he's still a man's man. Errr......woman's man. Am I making sense?
