With the low temperature tonight expected to be in the 50s I can say with great confidence Sara is the only person in South Carolina wearing a knit wool winter hat to bed (see the video at www.youtube.com/jna2039). The hat and two layers of clothes have kept her body temperature where it needs to be. She looked very peaceful and comfortable today bundled up in her crib in the NICU.
We got some good news today. Since she is now eating from a bottle the doctors today removed all of Sara's IVs, including the one in her head. It's now much easier for us to hold and feed her. The doctor says when she eats consistently for 24 hours she can come home. Saturday could be the earliest. We're just hoping it's sometime this weekend. Today Katie and I also began learning the things we'll need to do daily to care for Sara when she comes home.
This is Sara's fifth day in NICU. That's not considered a long stay in the world of tiny babies (Sara's neighbor has been there 15 days and counting). The nurse told us tonight that there are some babies in the NICU about a fifth the size of Sara. Again we are very thankful.
Katie and I have been making multiple visits to the hospital each day. We schedule our trips when Sara is scheduled to eat which is every 3 hours. Since it's a 20-minute drive to and from the hospital each day has been exhausting. Even though the nurses will feed her we like being with her when she eats because it's one of the few times she's awake.
Sara had lots of visitors today. Not only did Grandma Kathy and Papa Lee visit but both her big sisters did as well. This is the first time Katelyn and Isabella visited the NICU and both were very happy to see Sara again.
