Most of our Christmas cultural themes come from pagan Yule traditions associated with the winter solstice. The holly and conifer are symbols of life enduring through the darkest time of the year, and the stars represent the longest night, and the light of the sun that will soon begin to grow again.

Really, though, I wish we'd give the other seasonal holidays besides Halloween, Christmas and Easter their fair share of respect: Groundhog Day, May Day, Midsummer, Lammas and Harvest.
