The video misses the point of the name. Gandy dancing was a way of keeping cadence while laying track. It was especially necessary while doing curves so the bend was even. The Crew chief would establish a 'song' which was used to keep everyone hitting on the down note at once. I don't know my musical terms well enough to discuss the particulars, however I'm very familiar with the practice having lived in the South for years traveling on the rails and walking the track from town to town.
