@gslusher Yes I know she is a great actress, I have seen her several times live on stage. As Zerbinetta in Salzburg about 10-12 years ago in hot pants!! Also she was hilarious in La fille du Regiment at Covent Garden about 5 years ago with Diego Flores and and Alessandro Corbelli who is a great comedian. And in Lucia and Hamlet she was wonderful too. And I saw the Orpheus you mention on TV and loved it. I just think this Contes d' Hoffmann is such an inspired production that I would love the DVD

@Ariadne7710 In some arias, Dessay's performance, as here, is totally unexpected. As Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, she has a hilarious scene with her husband as Jupiter posing as a fly. She's sexy (great legs!), funny & seductive (in a outrageous, funny way), even to overacting, but she carries if off superbly. In others, she's tragic or just gorgeous. You have to SEE Dessay, as well as hear her, to appreciate her talent. She says that she's an actress who sings--an apt description!

@Ariadne7710 - Sorry to give the wrong impression! I have a DVD with this performance. It's "Natalie Dessay: Le miracle d'une voix." (Amazon has it.) It has 13 arias, including 3 versions of this one that are very different. They showcase not only Dessay's singing but her acting, both comedic and dramatic. In one as Zerbinetta from Ariadne auf Naxos, Dessay appears in a bikini & wrap skirt and flaming red wig. Very few opera divas could get away with that, but she looks fabulous. Get the DVD.

Incredible! I have the DVD. To me, Dessay's acting is as good as her singing. She is a comedic genius. Her expressions & movements are superb--and funny!

This is what I imagine it would be like if Lucille Ball had sung opera.
