The University of Central Lancashire has become the first UK university to have its own featured iPhone application available from the iTunes store.
The service provides students and staff with the latest information from the Students' Union, entertainment listings and maps of the university campus and Preston city centre.
The app builds on UCLan's well-known reputation for offering innovative remote and off-site services to its 35,000 students and staff members.
The new iPhone application illustrates UCLan's commitment to provide information and services to its students in a way that is convenient for them. Students today lead very busy lives -- balancing study, part-time work and social activities. The iPhone application demonstrates how UCLan is increasingly able to support its students in a way that recognizes their busy lifestyles, and ensures they are able to get the most from the latest advancements in technology."
The app makes use of many existing UCLan services. These include fast webmail access, a comprehensive library catalogue, staff directory, a list of campus facilities and the option for students to top up their printing accounts. Students can also book a meeting room in any of the university libraries by using the iPhone application.
Further plans to enhance the app include making use of the iPhone's location functionality to improve the search of services across campus and the development of an innovative news service.
The app can be downloaded free from the Apple App Store and is compatible with both the iPhone and iPod touch.
