Assembling of the steam engine is shown in the fourth quarter of the video.
We built (well...assembled) steam engines as a school project in a class of children with german as a second language. The exercise shown - naming all the parts of this steam engine - is to train pronunciation (pronunciationwise German is quite difficult for some)
The steam engine shown was first introduced by german company Kosmos somewhere around 1935 as a physics workshop (a box containing parts and instructions for a plethora of physics experiments). Kosmos still sells books, games and science workshops - but none as good as this one: They discontinued this particular set sometime in the seventies and spare parts are hard to get. There's a vibrant market for these sets on german eBay though, and they sell for 30-40 € (search for "Kosmos Technikus Experimentierkasten"). Contact me if you want to build one of these, i can provide you with close up fotos, short explanation and a sketch of the steering valve (the rubber stopper and turning thingy).

The music is "Dimokransa" by Mayra Andrade.

  • What if you forget your username, sldjfkjasdlfj? :P

  • @tyab87: I don't know my username by heart anyway - but fortunately, my computer does:-)

  • If everything is in English why is the speech in german? Not hard to follow cause it shows the parts and what not. Just curious if there is a verbal english version.

  • @LivingInEnvy Well, it's a german speaking class in the german speaking part of Switzerland. The kids are learning German because they've immigrated to Switzerland; they're speaking really slowly and are articulating the words very clearly. No english version, sorry. (I thought about providing english subtitles for a while, but then again, it's not that important a film.)

  • I would like to contact you to see if you ( or others that read this) may help locate English instructions for this kit. I have left you a message via youtube- I have an account also.

I want to introduce this to my daughters Montessori elementary school program

    Thanks again

  • @gregmoore57

Sorry for not replying earlier, gregmoore; first of all thanks for your kind comment. I'd love to help you with regards to english instructions for this kit. I am however not a native english speaker. On the other hand: I once had a girlfriend who was a Montessori kindergarden teacher, and the above video is really influenced by some of Montessori's concepts (I don't subscribe to her philosophy as a whole though). Can you leave an email adress on my profile page?
