16th Review.Blue Sabers is one of those 'plane-shmups'.The game itself is pretty much what youd expect:levels overrun with loads of enemy planes.Run of the mill shooter ? No, not exactly, the originality resides in the weapon system. You have at your disposal 4 weapons. The main shot is not very powerful, but its free (by free I mean unlimited ammo) The other 3 weapons do more damage but have limited ammo. This is where the support ship comes in.When you run out of ammo, you can 'call' that plane that comes and docks with your ship to re-supply your depleted ammo. While you are re-supplying, your plane is invulnerable to enemy fire, but it's the support ship that takes the damage. When it explodes that's it,youre pretty much done for as you wont be able to recharge the secondary weapons anymore.
The visuals are Ok, a mix of 2d and 3d, but the enemies and bosses are not the most original ones, they range from small jets, helicopters etc.. to bigger transports and missile launching mammoth sized bosses. The game itself can get very hard, and the fact that you have to pay attention to your ammo just makes it a pain in the 'you know what'.
When playing shmups you want to shoot stuff up, not save up ammo.An average shmup In my opinion.
Hope you enjoy the clip. Also please check out my other Doujins reviews.
