Straight No Chaser Terry Clark/Phil Wood 1959

In 1959 under the leadership of Quincy Jones a musical show was cris crossing Europe with an all star Cast. The dancers and singers were backed up by a fine team of jazz musicians. The show went eventually bankrupt but the musicians travelled for further arrangements and went through the Netherlands as well. Under the name Fancy Free they were recorded for one of the Dutch broadcasting companies.
The band plays "Straight No Chaser". You see and hear Clark Terry on trumpet and fluegelhorn, Phil Woods on alto sax, Sahib Shihab tenor sax, Quentin Jackson trombone, Patty Bown piano, Buddy Catlett bass, Joe Morris drums

  • Really melodic solo's, damn what an inspiration these cats are.

  • @nellar2002 The "vocalization with flute trick" was attributed to a classical flutist -- IOW, a flautist, named Gazzeloni.

I used to see Roland Kirk regularly at the Half Note in NY. Dinner, drinks, for two, and three sets (of two bands,) was less than $10.

  • @stevezurier

Like hip, man. I mean I dig thses sounds,daddy-o.

  • 新進気鋭時期のフィル・ウッズと、すでにこの時期大御所クラーク・テリーの"ストレート・ノー・チェイサー"だ!~映像にジャズってしまう(感激) #jazzm フルートはカーク?

  • Would never miss a Clark Terry concert when he came to Europe -( even had the honour to drive him to his hotel after a concert in Nice). Of course have many of his records. I am always amazed how his musical ideas just flow - never searching - just calling on that vast reservoir of music inside his soul. Does the tone of his flugel horn add to his genius?

  • Yeeeeah!

  • You can growl with brass instrument to.

  • @1979saxman

He's humming while playing. The style/technique was popularized & possibly created by Roland Kirk. He's the first guy I heard doing it and he was the best. Check out some of his early albums from around 1956-60.

  • Thanks joemaranzano and HCL991 for the pianist's name, Patti(y) Brown.

  • @tealemat it's Patti Bown
