Before this US Civil War tune became "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" it was "John Brown's Body." It began as a marching song glorifying the martyrdom of that revolutionary abolitionist and as the Civil War progressed the lyrics evolved into their present form. Freeing the slaves was a Republican undertaking.

The words He & His are clearly talking about the God of the Bible...that just does not make this only a religious song...it is very Christian. Context dictates interpretation. A wonderful post...thanks for sharing.

@ToltecaAzteca ...Respectfully,this song is not saying you have to be an American to possess these attributes, however it is part of the American Heritage. If someone says all lions are cats is a true statement. Saying all cats are lions would be a false statement. As far as the song being religious or not...just ask the question, "Who's truth is marching on"? It is a song with a call for us to take courage, to be like our Maker " as He (Christ) died to make men holy let us die to make men free.

The battle hymn should become our national anthem, for it holds more strength and passion in it's lyrics than our current one

Nice version! Too bad the choir didn't have more men .... this is one of those songs that I think sounds best with a strong representation of male voices.

Who is the black girl in the beginning of the video??

@jseelig4330 If you can't agree with me full, than it's okay: Free opinions! Nevertheless we are not far away in our opinions. I can tolerate your point of view. No matter whether religious or millitary aspects: This hymn is inspiring and one of the most beautiful tunes in the world!

@SpaceCowboy641 I respect your belief, but I don't agree with you. This song is just a Battle Hymn to me. Although I realize the word hymn in Battle Hymn kind of lends itself to the religious aspect, but I like it just for it's military aspect. Thanks for your reply though!

@jseelig4330 It's both: An PRAYER and A CALL TO ARMS !!! Hallelujah!

There is not Goddamn book in the world that states that one''''' '''''Has to be'''''' '''''' an American in order for that one person to be good, decent or brave. In short;Decency,-goodness or braveness are NOT an American quality exclusively or unique....Period
Beautiful!
