COLOMBO CITY BEAUTIFICATION IN FULL SWING

The sprucing up of Colombo with emphasis on serving the tourist with a 'Clean city and a Green city' with the accent on beautification is in full swing, Colombo is the largest and Commercial City in Sri Lanka. In the past Colombo was known as "Kolomthota." It was the Portuguese who called it Colombo in the year 1505. A Commercial City in a country is much populated and very busy. As such beautifying and standardizing Colombo was a great challenge. The Government drew more attention on beautifying and developing Colombo as a Commercial City in parallel to the development on the motherlands as an economic hub of South Asia.

The work was carried out under aegis of the Defence Ministry. Streamlined constructions are now being witnessed in the entire Colombo City replacing the disorganized roads. Taking cognizance of the safety of pedestrians, pavements and safety fences among the facilities provided. Cleanliness is now witnessed within the City. There is no dumping of garbage haphazardly. Priority has been accorded to the beautification of City. Among the other highlights is landscaping at several locations.
