The 2010 Community Breast Cancer Research Award is presented to Joe Gray, PhD, a distinguished scientist and world-renowned breast cancer researcher whose work in cancer genomics will have profound implications for long-term breast cancer therapies.

Dr. Joe Gray is the Associate Laboratory Director for Life Sciences and Director of the Life Sciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is also Adjunct Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and program leader for the Breast Oncology Program at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition, he is Principal Investigator of the NCI Bay Area Breast Cancer SPORE and an NCI Integrative Cancer Biology Program aimed at quantitative analysis of EGFR pathway signaling.

Dr. Gray's expertise is in 1) molecular analysis technology, and 2) identification of genomic aberrations that contribute to cancer pathophysiology and development of efficient strategies for enhanced marker guided cancer therapy --especially for breast and ovarian cancer. His work is described in more than 375 publications and in 50 US patents.

One of the most significant friendships that Zero Breast Cancer has developed over the years has been with Joe Gray. He was an early proponent of community participation in the research process and a leading supporter of advocate involvement. Over eight years ago, he facilitated ZBC's first Avon Foundation grant, invited us to Chair the Community Outreach and Translation Core of the Bay Area Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Center and most recently, has included Zero Breast Cancer in his Stand Up To Cancer grant.

The award is given to an individual who actively supports community and advocate participation in breast cancer research. Zero Breast Cancer is proud to recognize Dr. Joe Gray as this year's Community Breast Cancer Researcher.
