This video shows how the use of different microphones and microphone placement on an electric guitar amplifier can have a varying effect. Notice how the sound changes as the microphones are moved. Notice how different the microphones sound from each other. Notice how the microphones that sound good on the clean tone dont necessarily sound good on the distorted. • how much difference is a preamp going to make in the actual TONE and feel of the signal? I'm not getting very professional sounds with my sm57... but im running it straight into my little recorder. Will i get a better sound with say a focusrite pre? or will it just raise the level?

  • @Acidrain1993 Yes a preamp will make a difference especially with an sm57. These recordings were all done through a Focusrite Octopre.

  • hi, again could you list the mics used in this video?

    thanks

  • Shure SM57

    Sennheiser 421

    AEA R84

    Neumann U87

  • I knew that song was gonna get played as soon as that first note hit.

  • ribbon is my fav here for clean not so much for the distorted sound. The neumann sounds great for both sounds. 414 sounds like a tamer version of the Neumann. Really useful video thanks.

  • Hey nice video bro! I thinking on buying an audio interface for recording guitar at home? would you say the motu mircobook is a good one? or do you know about anything better into that range?? :)

  • fuck clean guitar!

  • wtf? why would you play clean guitar on a rectifier?

  • @Truthzilla true man... sometimes i feel u should get the best sound FOR THE MIX .. as oppose to just getting the completely best sound for everything u record...

  • If i were a audio tech for a concert, I would use an AEA R84 Ribbon microphone for the bass, Sennheiser 421 for guitars, Shure SM57 for drums and singers (The listed mics for the amps)

  • what kind of light up xlr cable is that?

  • Folks should keep in mind that when you hear something like a ribbon or an LCD mic, and you immediately respond to it, that is often because it's picking up a lot of low end. That makes a solo instrument sound really nice, but it may not be at all desirable in an actual mix. There's a reason the SM57 has been used in so many songs. Sometimes that limited frequency response sounds better in the mix, whereas the 414 or U87 may just end up having to be heavily rolled off on the low end in the mix.
