So, this thing has been talked about as a possible new machine to run RISC OS on, and the Linux community has shown an interest in it.

However, nobody knew what was inside of it. So I bought one, to figure out what was inside.

It's a 1.2 GHz Marvell 88F6281 Kirkwood CPU, as had been previously rumored, and an XGI Volari Z11 GPU with 8 MiB of VRAM. There's 512 megs of RAM and 512 megs of Flash (Serial ATA attached,) too. And, it has solder pads for a SATA connector (and SATA power, too) - not that it has room in the case for a SATA drive (although a CF to SATA adapter will fit no problem, I think.)

It's certainly an interesting alternative to the Beagleboard for Linux hacking, or for other ARM-based OSes.

  • Does the HP t5325 make any noise at all on it's own?

Or was your monitor making all the noise?

Does the HP t5325 have any fans?

  • @jcii2 t5325 is completely fanless, and the only noise it makes is from the speaker.

The monitor is an IBM T221, which has some rather hefty processing to handle over a gigabyte per second of data being shoved through it. It takes some fans to cool that stuff off.

  • But will it run DOS 5.0 with GeoWorks 1.2?

  • @Todd82TA Well, it's running Debian, so I could slap qemu or bochs or something on there, and do exactly that. (And, there's also DOSBox.)

  • @bhtooefr All I need now is an RLL/MFM to IDE to SATA converter.

  • @Todd82TA I never got the SATA port working on mine, so an RLL/MFM to IDE converter, and then an off the shelf IDE to USB converter would work.
